When my tutors and I initially chose the Pavilion design I should continue working on we all agreed that I should make it a edgier, open and also stretch it a bit more since it was too intimate and small. I need to come up with a simple idea to continue with the same flow of tubes without loosing foremost the original design or the idea of intimacy and mystery. Primarily I will solve all problems in the first model and come up with a better use of openings and seating to create a flowing pavilion.
Now that my tutors and I chose the best design I started to research some construction methods and materials I can use in the final project, however the most important aspect at the moment is the Location. I chose a very open area with a lot of advantages as much as disadvantages, however I would like to take a risk and make the most out of it. I mainly chose this part if the school because it is large enough to hold a large number of people around the Pavilion without distracting the flow in movement and I can also take advantage of the nice view and open space for lighting.
The next step in producing a TV Set for our school’s media studio was to select on of our earlier concepts and come up with a very good proposal from, which one would be chosen and later constructed. It was very difficult to keep in mind all aspects and responsibilities in contracting a physical set however it was fun and thus all students were enthusiastic to show their different designs. However the most problematic part was the preparation of the set of detailed drawings and visualizations mostly done in Autodesk 3DsMax. For most of us this was only the first time producing such a detailed Drawing however we tried our best to reinforce our strengths. In the end I came up with a design concept for the TV Studio proposal, which was mainly based on the word and several meanings of SPEED.
SPEED IN MOVEMENT… SPEED OF LIGHT… SPEED SHUTTER PHOTOGRAPHY… THE SPEED OF LIFE… SPEED OF THOUGHTS… and most importantly THE SPEED WITH WHICH THE YOUTH SOCIETY IS GROWING UP AND MATURING.
This concept was reflected in my design with a touch of bright rainbow colors, which is a part of the spectrum of colors that appear through the visible light and the speed of motion in the jotting foreground that gives a sense of high rapid motion in Speed Shutter Photography. Together with all the other elements I was really happy with the end result and even though this wasn’t the chosen proposal I am still very happy with my presentation and the amount of work I did in a short amount of time.
The last proposal is the one I would most likely be working with since it’s more different than the others and creates a different kind of atmosphere.
This proposal was inspired by the movement of a batch of drinking straws, which can create multiple shapes and models just be putting pressure at either end of the batch. Each time a pressed different areas I also created different openings that can also be used as passageways. I continued to play with the test piece until I found the perfect shape in black and fluo green drinking straws also positioned at an angle. All together it looks hard, edgy and contemporary however very mysterious and intimate. I still haven’t figured out some construction techniques but I really like the shape.

The second proposal was another experiment with 3 thin cardboard cut intricately cut with the same pattern and put upon each other in a wave like shape that later resembled the ‘Millefoglie’ pastry, which is a delicacy made up of multiple layers of pastry. These layers all together created a new pattern and an interesting form, which I believe served the exact purpose of an Open Air Pavilion however it had some disadvantages concerning assembly and construction. This creates a very interesting effect with both lighting and atmosphere but very difficult to produce with such limited techniques at school.
